My wife went to Morocco this last week, and brought home a TUB of Halva (with pistachios)! My kids had never had it before, and they were in heaven. It's so rich and creamy - my son said it was like "sesame flavored custard". All four of us gorged ourselves silly - and it made me think of your blog posting!

David, did you see http://www.thatwouldbeme.net/2008/05/smokey-tea-and-stinky-cheese/ which talks about some of Mom's other peculiar eating habits?

I have actually had some Indian Halva recently. It's creamier, not nearly so sawdust like, as I mentioned to Rachel.

Hey, that's funny - the exact same thing happened in my house. Exactly! Oh, wait a minute, you're my brother so it WAS my house. Sorry. Actually, I always loved the Halva (and lox, of course - I have a pound in the fridge right now).

I haven't had Halva in years, I'll keep an eye out for it. If I find some, I'll be sure to present it to my kids as a VERY special treat. I'm sure they'll love it, they eat everything.

Speaking of coincidences... I told my friend Anita, who is Singaporian of Indian heritage, about my impression, and she said exactly that to me, that Indian halvah is creamy. I'm going to have to try some, and share some Israeli Halva with her.

Hi, Vin,

Very funny. I'm not alone. One of the reasons I wrote this was that I had just bought some. My ten year old self would have been horrified. Or at the very least mildly annoyed.

Rachel, sweet sand works, too. I've discovered that halva is made in several cultures, some using very different ingredients. Indian halva is actually much creamier in texture.

Halvah! That's funny, that was the way it was in my house, the doling out of halvah and lox like precious gems. I agree with you about halvah -- I didn't much like it when I was a kid, but I never refused it. And now, I'm the one who goes to the deli counter at the local supermarket and calls out "Look! Halvah!" I don't think my kids would ever ask for me to buy it, but they don't refuse having some when I do.

Halva tasted like sweet sand to me when I was a kid. As an adult I've learned to savor the sesame taste and appreciate the crystalized texture. I've bought it for myself as a rare treat, and usually share it with someone, if there's a someone to share it with.
