Geoff — I get around in a power wheelchair. Because of a problem, I had only a small battery charger that would work very slowly. I found myself at a table near the TV, just sitting still while my wheelchair was being recharged, for over four hours. I unashamedly watched TV. My daughter brought me one of her favorite books which I had been putting off reading for the longest time. I read it cover to cover. It actually was a wonderful day all because, I was prevented from going about my usual frantic business. Thanks for giving me this idea — sometimes it’s a good thing to take a day-long vacation from being yourself.

Bonnie, I think I need to find a way to “go away” more often, at least every few months. I do remember life without computers, and I’m not sure how I even managed!

Barb, it is interesting that, as nice as the day was, as soon as the power was back on, I turned on the computer and went to work. Next time, I’ll have to plan a day where I don’t get to turn it on no matter what. Wonder if I can manage that.

I can completely identify with you Geoff! If I’m not multi-tasking at all times, I get that guilty feeling.
We all need a little time off (planned or unplanned) to be at our best.

Geoff, this is a great post! You are so right, no one died because you stepped away from the machine.

Every few months I take a day of silence, no tv, computer, cell phone and usually I try not to talk, just read, think, write, and enjoy the sounds of silence. We’re probably the last generation that can remember life before electronics, when we actually survived and led happy lives of oblivion without all this stuff.

It’s good to reconnect, and I’m glad you had such a pleasant day ;~D
